Passionate about providing solutions that are in balance with Clients’ specific needs, Libra SA Engineers can make it happen.
About
A deep rooted sense of hard work and thoroughness, as well as open and honest communication.
Whether you need additional mechanical engineering manpower as a result of an increase in workload, or specific engineering experience, speak to us. Libra SA Engineers aim to provide engineering design and support services that are balanced with our Clients’ specific needs. The saying holds: we must not design a Porsche when the client wants, and requires, a VW Beetle – AND vice versa!
“Balance is having the right amount — not too much or too little — of any quality, which leads to harmony or evenness.”
- Vocabulary.com
I feel that providing a fully compliant and sensible solution is the true challenge for any engineer: you must provide solutions that
address all your client’s requirements, but without unnecessarily over complicating it. In today’s budget-sensitive environments, providing balanced solutions are more crucial than ever.

Background
Experience in a diversity of training and projects over the years.
In the year 2000 I obtained my Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pretoria with distinction and in 2001 I started working for Iscor Flat Steel Products, Vanderbijlpark, now known as ArcelorMittal Vanderbijlpark. In 2003 I obtained my Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pretoria, which I completed on a part-time basis. I worked nearly eight years at ArcelorMittal. I started in a production environment at the finishing mills and then obtained six years experience in the maintenance and operation of turbo-machinery and steam systems in the infrastructure environment.

Years Experience in Process Plant Design and Construction
In 2007 I moved to the Cape and started working for VWS Envig, later known as Veolia Water Solutions South Africa. I obtained ten years’ experience in the process plant design and build environment. This included plant layout designs, piping designs, which included high pressure and temperature applications, and the design of small structures, platforms and complex pipe supports. I was involved in the full life cycle of the projects: from basic design through detail design procurement and fabrication, and finally construction and installation. The last four years I was the Lead Mechanical Engineer for the Design and Build division and had to establish mechanical working procedures from design to construction. I dealt with Industrial, petrochemical and municipal clients and consultants.
I started with my Masters degree at Stellenbosch University in the Biomedical Engineering field on a part-time basis as a personal interest, doing a research thesis on the manufacturing of a Transcatheter Heart Valve (THV) testing stent. This has since changed into an exciting project that forms part of Libra Engineers’ portfolio.

Years Experience in Infrastructure Supply Environment & Turbo-machinery Operation and Maintenance
Just as I believe that a solution must be balanced with its need, I believe that you should have a balanced professional and personal life as well. After a hard day’s work one should spend a little time resetting the system and I found my reset button out in nature. In 2002 I started mountain biking. Over the years I have lost the competitive need and it evolved into just spending active time outdoors with good friends, be it cycling, running, hiking, paddling or even swimming.

Projects
Providing solutions that are in balance with clients’ needs, one project at a time.
Libra SA Engineers have been involved in a number of successful projects for several Client’s. The following are some highlights of previous and existing projects:
- Lead Mechanical engineer for the mechanical completion of the first phase construction of the M&E contract of the Stellenbosch waste water plant 21 MLD MBR expansion.
- Lead mechanical engineer for the mechanical design and construction of a brownfields project on a large steel factory to enable the re-use of treated sewage water to augment process water in the factory. The plant included a large disk filtration system, complicated pipe design routing on existing infrastructure, the installation of several tanks, filters and pumps, all to fit into limited available spaces.
- Lead mechanical engineer for the for the mechanical design and construction of two waste water treatment plants on two separate distilleries to enable re-use of the water as wash-down and process water in the facilities. Both plants included Aerobic digestion, Membrane Bioreactors and Reverse Osmosis Skids.
- Mechanical Design and detail Fabrication drawings of a modular Dissolved Air Floatation (DAF) tank. The tank was constructed out of Stainless Steel and the Client required optimised design for minimal material usage to save costs.
- Design review and SANS design verification of several steel structures, including RO and UF skids, pipe rack structures and small platforms for the expansion of a water treatment facility on a coal mine.
- Lead mechanical engineer for the mechanical design of a new Wastewater treatment and recovery facility for a large distillery. The plant included both an Anaerobic and Aerobic digester, Membrane Bioreactor and a Reverse Osmosis step. It cleans effluent water for re-use, generate biogas that in future can be used for steam or electricity generation, and produce sludge that can be used for agricultural compost.
- The ongoing development of a stent for a Transcatheter Heart Valve with the Cardiology unit of the Stellenbosch University Department of Medicine
- Various small projects to assist clients with plant audits and general assistance to optimise client’s existing designs as required.
